Abstract

A Cognitive Stylistic Exploration of Narrative Positioning and Reader Engagement in 1984, examines how deixis, context-dependent linguistic expressions shapes narrative perspective and influences readers engagement. The study focuses on George Orwell’s 1984, a novel set in a dystopian world. This analysis uses Cognitive Deixis Theory and Deictic Shift Theory to look at how shifts in spatiotemporal, perceptual, and psychological deixis affect narrative positioning, which boosts emotional and cognitive engagement.  This research highlights the importance of deictic tactics in dystopian fiction by using cognitive stylistics, which links language patterns to how we think. This approach helps to enhance themes of surveillance and ideological coercion by controlling the viewpoint.  The results show that deixis is really important as a stylistic tool for creating narrative authority and connecting with readers. It helps us understand more about how language, thought, and power interact in speculative fiction. Furthermore, this study adds to the conversation about narrative empathy and the manipulation of texts, highlighting the critical role of cognitive methodologies in literary analysis.
