Abstract

This paper explains the concept, significance, and evolution of literary criticism in Sindhi literature, with particular focus on progressive criticism and the critical contributions of Rasheed Bhatti. The fundamental aim of criticism is to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of literary works with objectivity and fairness, thereby determining their true value and status. According to various scholars, criticism is not merely fault-finding; rather, it is a comprehensive analysis of both the artistic and intellectual aspects of literature, playing a vital role in its improvement. The paper highlights that criticism is essential for the development of human consciousness, as it makes a creator aware of both the merits and shortcomings of their work. In the modern era, the scope of criticism has expanded to include social, intellectual, and ideological dimensions, where literature is closely linked with life and society. Under the influence of the progressive movement, Sindhi literary criticism adopted new directions, transforming literature into a means of social change. Rasheed Bhatti is presented as an important progressive critic whose work primarily revolves around society and life. Through his unique style—especially his use of humour and satire—he effectively criticized social evils, regressive ideas, and literary weaknesses. His criticism avoids personality worship, emphasizes intellectual aspects, and promotes social awareness. He views literature through the principle of “literature for life” and stresses evaluating literary works in relation to social realities. According to the paper, Bhatti’s critical style is distinctive and impactful, as he conveys deep ideas through wit and humour, leaving a lasting impression on the reader or listener. He also critiqued weaknesses in literature, society, language, and publishing institutions, and offered practical suggestions for literary reform. In conclusion, the paper asserts that criticism is itself a creative process that evolves alongside literature. Rasheed Bhatti’s criticism stands as a significant milestone in Sindhi literature, contributing not only to the redefinition of literary values but also to the development of social awareness and intellectual consciousness.
