Sentence Pattern Diversity in Pakistani Secondary Education: A Syntactic Analysis of Reading Comprehension Passages in the STBB Grade 9 English Textbook

Abstract

This paper is a syntactic analysis of the sentence patterns in reading comprehension passages of the 9th -grade English textbook published by the Sindh Textbook Board (STBB), Jamshoro. The research is based on the qualitative descriptive and exploratory methodology that involves the identification, classification, and analysis of syntactic patterns in the chosen passages using the sentence pattern theory of Quirk and Greenbaum (1973) and phrase structure rules, established by O'Grady, Dobrovolsky and Katamba (1996). Five reading comprehension passages were purposively sampled and then systematically analyzed; the sentences have been coded and extracted and diagrammed using tree diagrams that were created through the Syntax Tree Generator tool. These results demonstrate that there are 27 different sentence patterns and they are: (1) S + Lv + A (absent), (2) S + Lv + SC, (3) S + Vt + dO, (4) S + Vt + dO + A, (5) S + Vt + dO + OC (absent), (6) S + Vt + iO + dO, (7) S + Vi, (8) S + Vi + A + A + A, (9) A + S + Vt + dO, (10) A + S + Vt + dO + A, (11) S + Vi + A, (12) Vc + S + Vt + dO + OC, (13) S + Vi + A + A, (14) S + Lv + SC + A, (15) A + S + Vi + A + A, (16) A + S + Vi, (17) S + A + Vi + A + A, (18) S + Vt, (19) S + A + Vi + A + A + SC, (20) A + S + Lv + SC + A, (21) A + S + Lv + SC, (22) S + Lv + SC + A + A + A, (23) S + Vi + A + A, (24) S + Lv + SC + SC, (25) S + Vt + dO + A + A + A, (26) S + Vt + Vt + A, and (27) S + Vi + SC + A. Analysis indicates that the textbook has successfully combined syntactic variety with cognitive accessibility, presenting learners with a variety of structures without using too complicated formations that could potentially complicate the understanding process.
