Abstract

This study examines the influence of social media use on beauty standards and self-esteem among young adults aged 18–30. In the digital era, platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat play a significant role in shaping perceptions of attractiveness through exposure to idealized and filtered images. Using a cross-sectional quantitative design, data were collected from university students through standardized self-report measures, including the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and indicators of social media usage and beauty standard internalization. Descriptive and correlational analyses revealed a significant positive relationship between social media use and the internalization of contemporary beauty standards. However, the direct relationship between social media use and self-esteem was not statistically significant, suggesting that self-esteem may be influenced indirectly through other psychological mechanisms. The findings highlight that frequent exposure to idealized online content reinforces narrow beauty ideals, which may contribute to appearance-related concerns. This study underscores the importance of media literacy, body positivity initiatives, and responsible social media engagement to promote psychological well-being among young adults.
