Weaving Sustainability: Uncovering Challenges in Pakistan's Textile Supply Chain- A Qualitative Perspective

Abstract

This paper explores the barriers faced by firms while implementing SSCM practices in Pakistan's textile industry. In-depth interviews were conducted with managers and directors of 15 firms drawn from the textile sector. Two broad themes of barriers are identified e.g. environmental and operational barriers. Weak regulations, socio-structural problems, and limited consumer awareness are a few of the environment-related barriers. Operational barriers include using outdated technologies, the expensive implementation of sustainable technologies, and poor collaboration among relevant stakeholders. Results show that these barriers are interlinked, and the need for collective actions among the government, industrial heads, and consumers is emphasized. The policy recommendations include stricter regulations, financial incentives to motivate firms that are implementing sustainable practices, and localized awareness campaigns. The study underlines cooperation, mutual learning, and moving away from a short-term survival mindset toward long-term sustainable practice.
